Cantor Workshop Richmond

St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Richmond will host the Central Vicariate workshop for Cantor Training on Saturday, August 29, 2015, presented by the Office of Worship and Diocesan Liturgical Commission. Janet Natale, a National Pastoral

St. Mary’s 5K fun run

Saint Mary’s Catholic School in Richmond will hold its 2nd annual Go Forth 5k and kids’ fun run on Saturday, September 26, at Deep Run Park (9900 Ridgefield Parkway). The kids’ fun run will start at 8 a.m., and the 5k run/walk will start at 8:30. There will be a bouncy house for kids and a kids’ corral available during the 5k for parents who want to join the race. Jog strollers will be allowed during the events.This event is hosted by Saint Mary’s PTO. See the link at www.saintmary.org to register for the race. Until September 11, prices are $25/participant for the 5k and $15/participant for the kids’ run, with a family cap of $80/family. Participants who register before 9/11 will receive a cotton race t-shirt (gender- and youth-specific sizes).

 

Adult faith formation

‘Facilitate With Confidence’ is the theme of an interactive workshop to help catechists of adult faith formation to help facilitate new skills. Sponsored by the Diocesan Office of Christian Formation and Church of the Redeemer in Mechanicsville, it will be held Saturday, Aug. 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Redeemer, 8275 Meadowbridge Rd. Discovering Christ series

St. Matthew Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, will offer Discovering Christ on Tuesdays, Sept 22 to Nov 2, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Assembly Hall. Holy Spirit Golf Tournament

The 7th Annual Holy Spirit Catholic Church golf tournament, in honor of Rev. Tim Kuhneman, will be held Friday, Aug. 28, at Honey Bee Golf Club, 2500 S. Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach. Format is 4-person Florida Best Ball. Single players are welcome. Prizes include $10,000 for a hole-in-one. Check-in is at noon and a shotgun start will be at 1 p.m. Cost of $75 per golfer includes greens fee, cart, awards dinner and a mulligan. Sponsorship opportunities are available. Center for Marriage, Family & Life holds Papal Mass Lottery

The Diocese of Richmond has been allocated a limited number of tickets to the Papal Mass and canonization of Blessed Junipero Serra to be celebrated on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. Tickets will be made available through a lottery drawing open to any parishioner within the Diocese of Richmond. There is no cost to enter the lottery and the tickets are provided free of charge. Each lottery winner will be allotted two tickets to the event. Winners will be announced on September 10, 2015. Rummage sale

St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 4491 Springfield Road, Glen Allen, will hold their 12th annual Rummage Sale on Saturday, September 12, from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thousands of items (all donated by parishioners) will be for sale, including toys, housewares, books, clothing, linens, sporting goods and more. All proceeds will benefit the village of Dos Palais in Haiti. Donation of items will be accepted at the church on Thursday, September 10, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Friday, September 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

‘Called & Gifted’ workshop

“Gifts of the Holy Spirit” will be the theme of a workshop on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 21-22, at Church of the Incarnation in Charlottesville. Church, military and science leaders to discuss ecology at Sacred Heart, Norfolk

A symposium in which Church, military, scientific and community leaders will discuss Pope Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home” will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk.

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo will introduce panel members.

The panelists will be Dr. William Dinges, Ordinary Professor of Religion and Culture in the School of Theology and Religious Studies and a fellow of the Institute for Policy Research and Catholic Studies at The Catholic University of America; U.S. Navy Rear Adm. David Titley (ret.), nationally known expert in the field of climate, the Arctic, and National Security; Emily Steinhilber, Assistant Director of Coastal Resilience Research at Old Dominion University; and others.

The event is being co-sponsored by the Virginia Catholic Conference, the Diocese of Richmond’s Office of Social Ministry, the Catholic Climate Covenant and Sacred Heart Parish.

The discussion will include how to apply the Pope’s encyclical to ecological issues, including the effect of rising tides and the climate crisis facing our common home.

Registration will begin with light refreshments at 6:30 p.m.

 

Care of Creation

In support of World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, St. Mary’s Church in Richmond will celebrate sung evening prayer on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 5:30 p.m. Pope Francis expressed his hope that this special observance would give Catholics an opportunity “to renew our personal participation in our vocation as custodians of creation, raising to God our thanks for the marvelous works that He has entrusted to our care, invoking his help for the protection of creation.” All are welcome!

 

Additional Sunday Mass at St. Joseph Church, Bon Air

St. Joseph Catholic Church (Extraordinary Form; Traditional Latin), 828 Buford Road, has added a third Mass to its Sunday schedule. Sunday Masses at 8:30AM (Low), 11:00AM (High) and 4:30PM (Low); confessions ½ hour before each Mass.
