Divine Mercy Sunday

St. Gregory the Great Church, Virginia Beach, will celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, April 3, at 3 p.m. The image of Divine Mercy will be displayed for veneration and the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be sung with accompaniment by the youth choir. Potluck refreshments will follow.

The Shortakes column is reserved for parish, school or community-building events like retreats, a speaker for a Lenten or Advent series, concerts, bazaars and major fundraising efforts.

Yard Sale

The K-Cettes Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus will hold an outdoor yard sale on Saturday, April 9 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Columbian Center, 2324 Pump Road, Henrico. All profits will be donated to the Coal Pit Learning Center whose mission is to provide children from low-income families with the educational skills necessary to succeed in school. Sellers can call 804-364-4970 to reserve space at a cost of $25.


John Allen, Jr. at St. Mary’s

John L. Allen, Jr., Catholic journalist and best-selling author, will speak at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richmond, on Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. Allen is Senior Vatican Analyst for CNN, writes frequently on the Church for major national and international publications and speaks on Catholic affairs, both in the U.S. and abroad. Pancake Dinner

The Knights of Columbus of St. Edward Catholic Church, 2700 Dolfield Road, Richmond, will hold a Pancake Dinner on Wednesday, April 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. Dinner will be served in the Community Center. $5 for adults, $3 for children 5-12 years of age, children 4 and under eat free. $20 maximum cost per family. All proceeds will benefit funding of an ultrasound machine for a local women's health facility.
