Girl Scouts Gold Award given

Savannah Speese, right, a junior at St. Gertrude High School in Richmond, and Emily Junkmann, left, a junior at Midlothian High School, both members of St. Edward the Confessor Parish, have earned the Girl Scouts Gold Award, a national honor for recognition of a girls leadership skills, creativity, value, and efforts to make the world a better place. Earning the honor requires spending at least 80 hours planning and implementing a challenging, large-scale project that is innovative, engages others, and has a lasting impact on its targeted community. Savannah, left, made 100 walker/wheelchair totes for the residents of St. Joseph’s Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Emily put together 100 toiletry bags for Richmond Fisher House, a facility which provides lodging to families of veterans receiving treatment at McGuire VA Medical Center.

Student raise money for Habitat for Humanity

As part of their focus on the Corporal Works of Mercy, the students and staff at Portsmouth Catholic Regional School collected money during Lent for Habitat for Humanity. Principal Mary Ellen Paul, Assistant Principal Donna Henry, School Chaplain Father Brian Rafferty and a few of the students presented Carla Holmes, Director of Family Services at Habitat with a check for nearly $650 dollars as well as 2x4’s, signed by the school community, that will be used in the building of the organization’s next home. Bishop Robert Brennan visits Richmond Diocese

On April 26th, Bishop Robert Brennan and the Superintendent of Schools of the Diocese of Rockville Center, NY paid a visit to the Diocese of Richmond to learn of the work our diocese is doing on Latino outreach through its Segura Educational Initiate for Children, a program designed to open our Catholic schools to low-income Hispanic Catholic children. According to a recent report from Boston College there are 14.6 million school-aged Catholics in the US and 8.7 million are Hispanic, however out of the 1.9 million students in Catholic schools only 300,000 are Latinos.

Academic Signing Day
