My dear friends,

During this Year of Mercy, I take the opportunity to offer you my best wishes for a holy journey through Lent. The celebration of God’s Mercy is essential to our mission as Catholic Christians. I hope this has been, and continues to be, an opportunity to grow in mind and spirit with Our Lord Jesus Christ.

I also take this occasion to invite you, along with your friends and family, to join me and all the priests of the Diocese at the annual Chrism Mass on Monday, March 21 at 6:00 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond. Following the Mass, there will be light refreshments served in the Virginia Commonwealth University, Shafer Dining Hall.

In order to allow the greatest number of priests and laity to participate, our Diocese celebrates the Chrism Mass on Monday of Holy Week. It is a unique opportunity for priests to witness publicly to a life-long commitment and our shared vocation. It is a sign of unity and communion between priests and their bishop. It also affords me the opportunity of catechizing you, the lay faithful, about the use and effects of the Holy Oils and Chrism in the Sacramental life of the Church. During this Year of Mercy, I trust that the Jubilee Indulgence may reach each one as a genuine experience of God's mercy as you visit our Cathedral through the Holy Door.

The Staff & Volunteers of the Cathedral also invite you to an informal Open House including self-guided tours of this historic building as well as the Museum of Virginia Catholic History located in the Upper Church & Crypt level.

I hope you will make every effort to attend the Chrism Mass. I ask for your continued prayers for our priests and our Diocese. May Christ, our hope, renew you by his grace and reconciliation.

Sincerely yours in Our Lord,
